Recording and MathLab sounds

Bring in your own sounds: record with a microphone, import audio files, play what you record on a keyboard, and use sounds you made in MathLab.

  1. Record into a sampler

Add a Sampler in Modular mode and press ● Record on it. Your browser asks for microphone permission (only now). Sing a note or clap, then press Stop. Play the keyboard: the recording is played at every pitch around the Root note.

  2. Record onto a track

In Studio mode add an Audio track, press its R to arm it, and press the record button in the top bar. The song plays from the playhead and your microphone is recorded in time with it. Headphones stop the speakers from leaking into the recording.

  3. Record what you play

Arm an instrument track instead and record: the notes you play (on screen, on the computer keyboard or on a MIDI keyboard) become a new region you can edit in the piano roll. In Modular mode, the record button captures the output itself as audio.

  4. Import audio

Use File → Import audio (or + on an audio track) for WAV, MP3, OGG or FLAC files, or Load… on a sampler.

  5. Sounds from MathLab

In MathLab, any script that makes a sound (sound(y, fs)) shows a player with an Open in SynthLab button. It opens SynthLab with the sound already in a Sampler, ready to play on the keyboard: a sine sweep, a chirp, the sound of a function.
